Happy Halloween!

31 Oct

Just wanted to thank everyone for reading my halloween posts and show my Audrey Hepburn costume as Holly Golightly, from my favorite movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I had so much fun getting candy with a friend, you’re never too old to Trick or Treat!

Happy Halloween!

Monday Musings: Coco Chanel

31 Oct

Coco Chanel, synonymous for French Chic, is a fashion icon, and was an influential designer for women in the twentieth century. Her clothes were inspired from her free and independent lifestyle, which makes her this week’s featured designer.

Saturday: Steal? or Splurge?

29 Oct
The weather might be getting chilly but in my mind I am still holding onto my dresses with tights! So this week is all about dresses, two are a fabulous deal while the splurge is something I have been drooling over for a month or so. Read on to see my picks for the week’s Steal? or Splurge?

Haute Halloween Costume Part 2

28 Oct

My last post on Halloween Costumes was so much fun that I decided to extend it into Part 2! Read on for some more fun and chic costumes!

Pretty Peacock

A Peacock is fun, fierce and feathered, which is all the components for a fun Halloween costume.

Pretty Pretty Peacock

For this dress a black or blue dress is the perfect base, and the ones I have chosen are embellished with either waves or feathers. I also included some great shoes, a mask and the feathered headband to add the final touch.

Are you a Good Witch or a Bad Witch?

While the witch costume is no stranger to Halloween, Glinda the Good witch is a fresh taste on a classic costume. And what makes it better than the typical witch is that her outfit is pink with sparkles!

Are you a good witch?
For this costume I found two very cute pink dresses, that would be a great addition to any girl’s closet. For accessories you’ll need a crown (duh) and a sparkly wand, as for shoes you could wear anything that you have, but I love these sparkly silver pumps and silver oxfords.

The one and only: Carrie Bradshaw

Samantha, one of Carrie’s BFF’s, has said that there are only two choices for women on Halloween: a witch or a sex kitten. Yet I think a perfect costume from the series would be Carrie Bradshaw, who is a Class A fashionista.

Carrie Bradshaw
To start this costume needs a basic pink spagetti strap tank top, paired with the iconic white tutu skirt. This skirt includes the glitter belt so it is just perfect I also added two paires of strappy pink shoes to complete her outfit. As for accessories, add whatever you think is fierce! I chose to add these dangling faux diamond earrings and a rose covered clutch.
I Believe in Audrey
Audrey Hepburn can do no wrong, she’s is stylish and classy to a fault. For this costume channel Holly Golightly, from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s, for an easy costume with a classic look.

Every girl owns a LBD, and Audrey accessorized hers in such a classic and iconic way. Pair your dress with a pearl necklace, a tiara that clips into the front of your hair, black pumps, and a pair of ray bands. Black gloves are a MUST for pulling this look together!

Cruella De Vile

While many girls will don princess dresses on Halloween, this Disney villain is the perfect character for a halloween costume. Cruella is iconic, quite stylish, and I  might actually like her if she wasn’t trying to kill, cute Dalmatians of course.

Cruella Devine

This costume like the Audrey Hepburn costume, starts with a black halter dress as its base. From there add some faux fur, like the vest pictured or go all out with a long faux fur coat. For accessories grab some red gloves, a turquoise ring, a feathered boa and if you like wearing wigs, this white and black wig will complete your look. I have also included a pair of Dalmatian patterned flats for irony, as well as the MAC makeup inspired by Cruella.
So for this Halloween are you rocking feathers? Being a good witch? Or maybe the villain?

Haute Halloween Costumes

27 Oct

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Anyone who knows me, knows that I love two things: dressing up, and eating candy. So for this post I will be giving some fun ideas for some last minute Halloween ensembles, but use some pieces that you can wear beyond the holiday.

Retro Flight Attendent

Up, Up and Away!

The idea of dressing as a stewardess is not a new one, yet with the new show Pan Am, the vintage stewardess look is a perfect costume!

Up Up and Away

For this costume you could go with a blue dress, or to be more authentic try a pencil skirt and blazer combo. The white blouse is an absolute steal, $20 Old Navy, and goes perfectly with either white or blue heels. To complete the look I included a pair of white gloves and a blue bag.

Beyonce

This has been the year of Beyonce, with a baby on the way and multiple hit songs she can do no wrong. I personally love her Countdown video, for the catchy tune and impeccable styling, and the best part is that most of her outfits are affordable and chic costumes!

These outfits are so simple and easy to recreate! For the first costume, brave souls can invest in leotards, and for those non dancers, a simple body con dress will also be perfect. This costume is perfect for you and two of your friends, as everyone can add another versatile dress to their closets but can look chic and put together. To complete the look getting matching pumps that co-ordinate with your dress and of course, a floppy black and white hat.

The Countdown: Inspired Costume

The other Beyonce costume is super simple, with just a pair of leggings, a turtleneck, some high socks and loafers you are on your way to a classic costume!

Halloween Housewife

While I am a huge fan of the Real Housewives series on Bravo, the most stylish housewives lived in the fifties. For this costume you need a very cute dress complete with a petticoat to add the volume and shape of a fifties dress. To complete this look add some pearl earrings, a necklace, and a pair of kitten heels.

So is everyone else just as excited for halloween as I am? What will you be going as?

What Will I Make Wednesday: Outlined Headboard

26 Oct

When I was a sophomore I transferred to a small arts school in the city, where I had wanted to go since the ripe age of nine. Yet the issue with transferring was I came a few months too late for the housing lottery and started the hunt for apartments. A year later, it’s still strange to be going back to an apartment instead of a dorm. But I really love my place, and I love finding new and fun ways to make it truly mine. So this week’s What Will I Make is an outlined headboard. I saw a cool photo of a simple outlined headboard for above your bed (and as I am lacking one, I decided to make one).

Materials for this makeover

  • Card stock or heavy paper (I used water color paper since I had some lying around)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Black paint, or markers
  • A pencil
  • Possibly a stencil
I chose to copy my headboard at home which has to long poles with circles at the end, with a place to meet in the middle. To start I suggest looking for a headboard design that you find pleasing. While are several stencils out there I chose to free hand it, and draw my own.
  1. I started by tracing my design in pencil first, then used the scissors to cut out the pieces. I then laid the pieces out on my kitchen floor so that I knew the widths were fairly equal.
  2. I then started to paint the pieces, and set them out to dry.
    3.  Once the pieces were dry I started to line them up on my wall to see how they fit, and trimmed several of the pieces so that the widths were even.
    4. Using clear tape, I taped the headboard to the wall, and stood back to admire my handiwork.
This is such a fun and easy do it yourself project that I hope you try it out too!

Trendy Tuesday: Capes, Stylish? or just for Superheroes?

26 Oct

When I hear cape, I think superhero. When I hear cloak, I think Harry Potter. Yet somehow I have started to grow a fondness for these jacket alternatives as the weather is getting colder. Capes were a big hit last winter, but have also made an appearance in a few runway shows for Fall collections. Which make capes and cloaks more than just a one-hit-trend, it seems to be that the capes are here to stay.

A Little History on Capes and Cloaks

People have been wearing capes and cloaks forever, well not actually forever, but capes were extremely popular in medieval Europe. The cape has had many resurgence in fashion, where it will appear and slip away just as quickly. Yet capes have several benefits for the wearer, aside from warmth. For one capes are perfect for dressier occasions, where you’re garment is something that you want to cover and not zip or button into a coat or a jacket. Outerwear, such as capes and cloaks are definitely investment pieces. When I purchase I coat I want to know that I can wear it for several seasons, so why not invest in a great statement piece, that looks good on you and makes you feel good.

Capes in Action!

I have found several capes and cloaks that are functional, fashionable and don’t look like you’re playing dress up.

Pretty Poncho

This first cape is light but what it lacks in warmth, it makes up for with style. The navy blue, assures that this cape will fit into anyone’s wardrobe and can be styled in a variety of ways. In this set I chose to wear it with a dress and tights. I thought that matching the dresses to the brown color of the buttons and detail on the cape would give this outfit a put together look. Add gray tights, a pair of heeled oxfords, a locket, and of course a bow,and you’re ready to go!

Cloak #3
This second cloak is from H&M and makes me feel cozy just looking at it. Since it is very simple I thought it would pair nicely with some black skinny jeans, and a pair of black loafers. The accessories are very simple and classic with pearls and gold as the theme.
This next cape is from Modcloth and has a lovely tartan pattern and a big bow to tie everything together! Going with the plaid theme, I decided to stick with very basic dresses in both grey and black, that will let the plaid be the statement. For the legs I added thigh highs which will go great with the white and brown oxfords. Instead of a boring watch I found these cute bracelets with a watch, and a cute shoulder bag to complete the look.
Sweater Cape
While the other capes have been outerwear, this cape is a cable knit sweater from Michael Kors, that has the perfect balance of bagginess and shape. To match with the sweater, I added a pair of maroon jeans, with a long sleeve white t shirt to wear underneath the sweater. For accessories I added some turquoise rings, that really pop against the maroon, and some really awesome perforated booties, from Forever 21. (I bought them in black for about $25, talk about a steal!) With this outfit you are ready for apple picking and just looking nice next to some foliage.
So what are your thoughts, are capes for Little Red Riding Hood and Superman? Or will you be investing in some new outerwear this fall and winter?

Monday Musings: Marc Jacobs

26 Oct

So I am bit behind in the days of the week. Today I will be posting both Monday and Tuesday’s posts, which means double the fashion! For this week’s Monday Musings, I have chosen American fashion designer Marc Jacobs.

Saturday: Steal? or Splurge?

23 Oct

I love to shop, but being on a college girl’s budget takes the spontaneous out of shopping. So I like to plan to save for purchases I love, yet also keep an eye out for a great deal. This week I have been on the look out for some cute fall shoes and have found two great pairs for this week’s Steal? or Splurge?

Celebrity Style: Zooey Deschanel

20 Oct

I have always had a love for Zooey Deschanel, it could be the fact that we have the same birthday or both have dark bangs. But regardless of the reason, Zooey Deschanel, is the queen of all things cute in my book. She’s the indie goddess who has perfected her own vintage look, and I love her effortless style. In this post I will feature her clothes that she wore in the Cotton Fabric of my Life Campaign. Watching this commercial I fell in love with the clothes she wore and wanted to create affordable versions of her outfits.
